Waymo Starts Self-Driving Taxis in San Francisco

Google's sister company wants to offer self-driving taxis on a large scale in the American metropolis of San Francisco.   People can drive a self-driving Jaguar I-Pace electric car around San Francisco for free when they sign up with Waymo's Trusted Tester program through an app. The users must then sign a nondisclosure agreement and provide feedback to the company. Although the taxis are fully autonomous, there will be a driver present to take over the wheel in case of an emergency. The pilot project in San Francisco is considered an important milestone for Waymo. So far, the company has only tested self-driving taxis in a Phoenix suburb, where drivers are driven without an emergency driver. But in that desert city, the weather conditions, traffic and infrastructure are much mor...

Conservative Radio Host Who Did Not Want to be Vaccinated Dies of Corona

Conservative radio host Phil Valentine from the American city of Nashville has died from the effects of the coronavirus. He regularly downplayed the vaccines and regularly spread fake news about the virus. Valentine was 61 years old.   Phil Valentine was a notorious vaccine doubter with a talk show on radio station 99.7 WWTN-FM in Nashville, Tennessee. He said about the corona vaccine, among other things: "I have a shallow risk of getting corona and dying from it if I get it. So why would I risk a heart attack or paralysis by getting vaccinated?" He was also a proponent of Ivermectin, an anti-parasite drug circulating in conservative circles as "the panacea against corona." On his show, he released a self-written parody of the Beatles song Taxman, called Vaxman. He makes fun of mas...

Prices for US Products Continue to Rise

The Prices US producers receive for their products rose again in July. Prices have been rising for some time, partly because there is a lot of demand for various products.   Also, because the supply of materials is faltering and because the costs of raw materials such as metals, wood, and grains and soybeans are rising. Producer prices rose 1 percent from June, the US Department of Labor reported. However, compared to July 2020, the increase was 7.8 percent. That is the most significant annual increase recorded by the ministry since 2010. Rising producer prices are part of the explanation for rising inflation. Companies will also want to partly pass on the higher prices they have to pay to producers from their customers. Rising wages due to a shortage in the labour market also con...

Wall Street Excited About Snap’s Quarterly Results

Social media company Snap gained a lot of market value on Friday at the start of trading in New York. Investors reacted enthusiastically to the company's strong quarterly results. Twitter and chip group Intel has also looked at the books.   Twitter was also popular, but the world's largest semiconductor manufacturer was disappointed somewhat and was, therefore, one of the losers on Wall Street. The share of Twitter rose more than 1 percent, and Snap was even 24 percent higher in the first trading minutes. Twitter achieved almost three quarters more revenue in the second quarter than a year earlier. This was mainly because advertisers found the site with mini-blogs more attractive than before. In addition, more regular users were added to Twitter. Snap, the company behind the Snapch...

Trump Engages in Legal Battle With Twitter and Facebook Bosses

Former US President Donald Trump, who has been banned mainly from social media, will file lawsuits against Facebook boss Mark Zuckerberg and Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey.   He will reportedly announce the legal steps on Wednesday, news site Axios reports based on insiders. Trump has long argued with tech giants Facebook and Twitter over freedom of speech and censorship. As a result, the former president has been banned entirely by Twitter. Facebook deleted him for two years. The bans came after the violent attack on the Capitol on January 6 by Trump supporters. The legal battle is backed by the America First Policy Institute, a nonprofit organization that stands behind Trump's policies. These would be collective lawsuits, in which steps are taken on behalf of a larger group.

Trump Chief Surrenders Under Criminal Investigation

Trump Organization finance director Allen Weisselberg surrenders to authorities as part of a criminal investigation into former President Donald Trump's company. That reports The New York Times.   Allen Weisselberg walked into the building that houses the Manhattan criminal court today, according to the American newspaper. He and a Trump Organization representative are expected to appear in court later in the day. In recent months, it was investigated whether tax had been paid on, among other things, cars, homes and apartments for employees. The prosecutors tried to get Weisselberg's cooperation, but his lawyers always said he wouldn't. Now the financial director has decided to cooperate. These are the first charges against former US President Donald Trump's company since prosecut...

OECD Focal Point Looks into Chevron Tax Avoidance

The National Contact Point for OECD Guidelines (NCP) handles a complaint from the trade union FNV about tax avoidance by the American oil and gas company Chevron.   FNV submitted the complaint to the NCP 2.5 years ago. This institution checks whether companies adhere to the guidelines of the OECD, the organization of mainly western industrial countries, on corporate social responsibility. FNV chairman Tuur Elzinga expects a "firm final judgment" from the NCP and realizes that such a judgment does not help much. "The NCP cannot impose a penalty, and Chevron has walked off the table during discussions in the complaints procedure. That shows that Chevron is evading its responsibility." Elzinga, therefore, sees more benefit in new legislation that puts an end to such practices. "That ...

Trump Administration Seized Democrats Data From Apple

During the early days of Donald Trump's presidency, the US Department of Justice has subpoenaed Apple to obtain information about at least two Democratic representatives, their employees and their families.   One of them was leading Democrat Adam Schiff and The New York Times reports citing insiders. According to the paper, prosecutors were trying to identify the media sources, which at the time reported contacts between Trump associates and Russia. The Justice Department's suspicions focused on Democratic members of the House Intelligence Committee. Schiff is now chairman and was its leading Democrat at the time. The files of at least twelve people - including a minor child - who had a link with the committee were seized in 2017 and early 2018. Apple would only have handed over m...

Joe Biden Talks to Boris Johnson about Special Relationship

US President Joe Biden will meet British Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Thursday in Carbis Bay in Cornwall, England. It is the first leader to speak to Biden on his first foreign trip as president.   It will be a man-to-man conversation with no officials or ministers, which is pretty much a tradition in US-UK relations that presidents and prime ministers invariably refer to as a special relationship. Biden will give the impression that his country is entirely back and reliable in world politics after his predecessor Donald Trump. The latter wanted to focus on domestic affairs. Biden and Johnson have not met as far as is known, and previously Biden dismissed British Conservative politician Johnson as a "physical and emotional clone of Trump". Biden will also reportedly elaborate o...

US Recovers Most Ransom After Major Cyber Attack on Oil Pipeline Company

The US government has recovered much of the ransom paid after the cyber attack on oil pipeline company Colonial Pipeline.   The FBI found 63.7 bitcoins, which is worth about 1.7 million euros today. The unprecedented cyber attack forced Colonial Pipeline to shut down its network and endanger the fuel supply of large parts of the US. The US Justice Department "found and recovered most" of the ransom paid by Colonial Pipeline, Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco said at a news conference. It concerns 63.7 bitcoins! At the time of the hacking, bitcoin was worth a lot more. The company paid the cybercriminals nearly $5 million. The FBI was able to recover the bitcoins because it is in possession of the "private key" (the password) to open the hackers' bitcoin wallet. How the FBI got ...
