Video Conferencing Company Zoom Revenues Quadrupled Year on Year

Video conferencing company Zoom has managed to quadruple its revenues for the second quarter in a row compared to a year earlier.   That it was a good year for Zoom, this must be evident from the quarterly figures of the video conferencing specialist. In the third quarter, the company brought in $ 777.2 million in revenue, four times more than the same period last year. This makes it the second quarter in a row in which Zoom has quadrupled its income. The popularity of the service, which is one of the more intuitive ways to remotely video call each other, exploded early this year when several countries went into lockdown. And despite a series of scandals and privacy concerns, Zoom seems to be maintaining that success too. The company now says it has 433,700 subscribers with more ...

Bouterse: Regret Not Seeing the Murder of Opponents Coming

Former president of Suriname and ex-army leader Desi Bouterse regrets not seeing the shooting of fifteen political opponents in December 1982 coming.   "I'm not proud of that," he said on Monday during a court-martial in court in Paramaribo. It was the first time in court that Bouterse discussed the contents of the events 38 years ago, the so-called December murders. He did so by reading a statement. The heart of his argument was that the political opponents had been rounded up and later killed for preparing an enemy invasion. According to the former army chief, the court-martial never made any truth-finding. Important witnesses, such as the Dutchman Peter van Haperen, have never been heard. Also, incriminating information from the Netherlands, among others, has been ignored by ...

Last Year the EU Issued Three Million Residence Permits

Last year, EU countries issued three million residence permits to non-EU citizens. One-third of this was for people from Ukraine, Morocco and India who came to live in the EU to work, study or join the family.   Since 2013, the number of residence permits issued in the EU has been growing steadily. In 2019, this was an increase of 6 percent, or 163,000 people, compared to the previous year, the European statistics office reports. On average, 41 percent of all residence permits in the EU were related to work and 27 percent to family. With a quarter of all residence permits issued by the EU countries in 2019, Poland led the way. The vast majority there, 551,000 of the 625,000 residence permits, were for Ukrainians who moved to their neighbouring country for work. Germany, Spain, Fr...

Chancellor Merkel Wants to Keep Ski Slopes Locked

German Chancellor Angela Merkel would prefer to see the ski slopes in the Alpine countries closed due to the coronavirus.   However, she expects that it will be difficult to reach agreements on this, especially with neighbouring Austria. "The ski season is coming. We will try to coordinate European whether the ski areas remain closed," Merkel said in the German parliament on Thursday, where the corona measures were debated. French President Emmanuel Macron and Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte have already announced that they want to keep the slopes closed. Austria wants to open the ski areas under strict corona conditions. The country says it misses out on 800 million euros in income per week if there are no winter sports and then demands compensation from the European Union...

The Number of New Corona Infections in Germany is Rising Sharply

The number of new corona infections detected in the last 24 hours has skyrocketed in Germany to 18,633, reports the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), the German counterpart of RIVM.   On Tuesday, 13,554 new infections were reported. The number of new infections reported on Tuesday meant that a three-day decline in the number of new corona cases in Germany came to an end. The number of new cases fell by about 5,000 a day from about 23,000 on Saturday to about 16,000 on Sunday and about 11,000 on Monday. Now the number of new infections seems to be increasing at almost the same rate. The death toll in Germany ran fast in the past 24 hours with 410 deaths. The corona epidemic has now claimed the lives of 14,771 people in total, according to official figures.

NATO Chief: Biden is Also Putting Pressure on Allies

President-elect Joe Biden, like current President Donald Trump, will continue to pressure European members of the alliance to increase their defence spending, NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg said.   The still sitting Trump, according to Stoltenberg, had "his own style" and was "quite clear" to the other members about his expectations. Stoltenberg says he is almost sure that Biden will express "the same expectation of the European partners". In an interview with several German newspapers, Stoltenberg said he is confident that NATO in Biden has "a strong supporter of the alliance." Quite different from Trump, who once called NATO "obsolete." Stoltenberg and Biden spoke on Monday for the first time since the Democrat came out as the winner of the elections earlier this month. The NATO ch...

Twitter Inexorably Hands Over Presidential Accounts to Joe Biden

President-elect Joe Biden will have access to all US presidential Twitter accounts following the inauguration on January 20, 2021.   The messaging service has stated that it will hand over the accounts to Biden regardless of whether or not President Donald Trump admits his loss. "Twitter is actively preparing to support the transition within the White House," a Twitter representative said over the weekend. 'Just like during the presidential transition in 2017, this process also takes place in close consultation with various authorities.' Not only will Biden gain access to the official presidential account @POTUS starting January 20, other White House accounts, such as the First Lady's, will also be transferred. Donald Trump has never actively used the presidential account, which ...

Number of Corona Infections in India Passes the 9 Million Mark

The number of coronavirus infections in India exceeded 9 million on Friday.   In the second most affected country in the world, more than 132,000 deaths from the disease have now also been recorded, according to the latest official figures. India saw a drop in the daily number of new cases over the past month, but it still records an average of around 45,000 new infections every day. The capital city of New Delhi, faced with the double scourge of environmental pollution and the coronavirus, saw infection rates rise to over half a million with record growth in daily cases. On Thursday, the mega-city administration quadrupled fines for not wearing a face mask in an attempt to get a grip on the epidemic. One of the largest cemeteries in Delhi is quickly filling up, and gravedigger ...

Trump Claims Pennsylvania Election Victory By the Judge

President Donald Trump's campaign team on Wednesday demanded that Trump be declared the winner in the state of Pennsylvania.   Team Trump believes that the state parliament, where Republicans hold the majority, should select the electors to elect the eventual president. In the documents submitted, the Trump campaign asks the federal judge to declare election results in Pennsylvania "imperfect" and order the state parliament to select electors. The request is part of a series of adjustments by the Trump campaign to the Pennsylvania lawsuit. Trump's Democratic challenger Joe Biden won the election with an expected number of 306 electors, against Trump's 232. Whoever has 270 or more electors is the winner. If Trump manages to turn the outcome in Pennsylvania (20 electors) in his fa...

Amnesty: Still Too Few Reforms Against Exploitation Qatar

Qatar, the host of the 2022 FIFA World Cup, is still not implementing enough reforms to improve the conditions of foreign guest workers, Amnesty International said.   The human rights organization said in a report Wednesday, two years before the kick-off of the World Cup, that thousands of workers are still at the mercy of unscrupulous employers, whose abuse remains unpunished. Conditions for labour migrants in the oil state have improved in recent years. Amnesty says it welcomes the reforms of the labour market but points out that implementation can be improved. "Then many problematic aspects would be removed," said Regina Spöttl, Amnesty's Gulf state expert. After a sustained deluge of international criticism, Qatar decided to implement reforms to improve the situation of migrant...
