India Only Wants to Become Climate Neutral in 2070

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that his country wants to become climate neutral by 2070. That's 10 years later than China and 20 years later than most major economies that committed before.   The date may not be what the world was hoping for, but it's a step(s) forward, as it's India's first time to speak out effectively. Countries like the US, Japan, South Korea, the UK and the European Union aim for climate neutrality by 2050. But India has consistently pointed out that its historical emissions are much smaller than most Western industrial countries. Last week it had refused to put a date on climate neutrality, so it is a step forward in that area. In the meantime, India also wants to further focus on new technologies for green energy. Modi announced that by 2030 his c...

Indian Regions Relax Measures Against Coronavirus

Several Indian regions relaxed various corona measures on Monday as the number of infections fell to the lowest level in more than two months. In the capital, New Delhi, all shops and shopping centres are allowed to open again.   The cafes, gyms, cinemas and parks in New Delhi will remain closed. Furthermore, the state of Tamil Nadu, for example, allows more people to be in the workplace and liquor stores can open their doors again. If the number of infections rises again, India wants to reintroduce the restrictions. The second wave of infection in India started in April and peaked in early May, with more than 400,000 confirmed cases per day. Authorities reported just over 70,000 new cases on Monday, the lowest number since March 31. The pressure to relax is great as many millions ...

Number of Corona Infections in India Passes the 9 Million Mark

The number of coronavirus infections in India exceeded 9 million on Friday.   In the second most affected country in the world, more than 132,000 deaths from the disease have now also been recorded, according to the latest official figures. India saw a drop in the daily number of new cases over the past month, but it still records an average of around 45,000 new infections every day. The capital city of New Delhi, faced with the double scourge of environmental pollution and the coronavirus, saw infection rates rise to over half a million with record growth in daily cases. On Thursday, the mega-city administration quadrupled fines for not wearing a face mask in an attempt to get a grip on the epidemic. One of the largest cemeteries in Delhi is quickly filling up, and gravedigger ...

More Than 8 Million Corona Infections in India

India passed the grim milestone of 8 million corona infections on Thursday. The second hardest-hit country in the world is gearing up for a second wave.   According to the latest figures from the Indian government, a total of 8,040,203 corona infections have been identified. In the country of about 1.3 billion inhabitants, 120,527 have been proven to have died from Covid-19. The Indian death rate is in stark contrast to the most affected country in the world, the United States. According to the figures from Johns Hopkins University, 8,856,413 infections have been diagnosed there, but no fewer than 230,000 people died. Although mortality in India appears to be relatively limited and the number of new infections has been declining in recent days, authorities are bracing for a second...

India is Suffering from the Heatwave and Natural Violence

India is suffering from a severe heatwave during the corona crisis. The mercury rose to 50 degrees in some places. The country is now also dealing with flooding and a locust plague.   The 1.3 billion inhabitants of India are more likely to deal with warm weather, but Wednesday's temperatures are seen as unprecedentedly high. In the capital New Delhi, temperatures have been measured of 47.6 degrees. That means that it is the hottest day in May in 18 years. It was even hotter in the northern city of Churu. The UN World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has called on governments to consider measures to ensure human safety in the event of a heatwave during the corona crisis. A spokeswoman emphasized this week that it is one of the hottest years ever recorded. Measures often taken wi...

Residents of India Have to Stay Inside Longer Because of Coronavirus

The approximately 1.3 billion inhabitants of India will have to stay inside for at least two more weeks after May 4 because of the corona crisis. However, the measures are being relaxed here and there.   The Indian Interior Ministry announced on Friday that the lockdown would be extended by two weeks. Travelling between the states will, therefore, remain prohibited for the time being. Restrictions are eased in areas where no new infections are reported. This is mainly intended to get the economy going again. The country was locked on March 25 when just over 600 infections had been diagnosed, and 10 patients had succumbed. There are now officially 35,000 infections with more than 1,000 deaths.

Already 46 Dead in India in the Most Violent Protests in Decades

In the Indian capital New Delhi, 46 people were killed during the most violent protests in decades. Indian authorities confirmed this morning.   The situation in the country remains tense since the protests against a new citizenship law started. This already degenerated into fierce street fights and vandalism at schools, shops and mosques. The cause of the violence is the opposition of Muslims to the so-called "Hindu First" citizenship law of Indian nationalist Prime Minister Narendra Modi. According to critics, citizenship law discriminates against Muslims who have been made scapegoats by Modi for years. Muslims are the most significant religious minority in India and make up around 14 percent of the Indian population. The Hindus account for around 80 percent. The Muslims in the...
