Number of Corona Infections in India Passes the 9 Million Mark

The number of coronavirus infections in India exceeded 9 million on Friday.

In the second most affected country in the world, more than 132,000 deaths from the disease have now also been recorded, according to the latest official figures.

India saw a drop in the daily number of new cases over the past month, but it still records an average of around 45,000 new infections every day.

The capital city of New Delhi, faced with the double scourge of environmental pollution and the coronavirus, saw infection rates rise to over half a million with record growth in daily cases.

On Thursday, the mega-city administration quadrupled fines for not wearing a face mask in an attempt to get a grip on the epidemic.

One of the largest cemeteries in Delhi is quickly filling up, and gravedigger Mohammed Shamim told AFP news agency. “I only have room left for about 50 to 60 funerals. And then? I have no idea.”
