Corona Infections in Germany Rose Faster

The number of new corona infections detected in Germany was higher on Wednesday than the day before. Germany's Robert Koch Institute reported a further 7,556 corona cases, up from 3,856 on Tuesday.   Also, 560 corona patients died, according to official figures. The number of diagnosed corona cases in Germany is rising much less quickly than at the end of last year. Then the institute, the German RIVM, sometimes reported tens of thousands of new infections per day. Although some corona measures are now being relaxed again, there is also great concern about new virus variants. They are seen as more contagious. The German authorities decided on Tuesday to extend the entry ban from countries with many infections with corona variants. The measure, which was due to expire this week, n...

German Weekly Coronavirus Figures at the Lowest Level in Months

Germany is making progress in the fight against the coronavirus. For the first time since the end of October, less than 100 infections per 100,000 inhabitants have been detected in a week.   That weekly figure peaked in Germany on December 22, when it stood at 197.6. It now stands at 98, reports the Robert Koch Institute, the German counterpart of the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM). The German authorities are aiming to get the weekly figure below 50. They instituted a lockdown to achieve that. Non-essential shops, catering establishments and schools had to close at the end of last year by order of the government. In any case, those restrictions will remain in effect until mid-February. Germany has reported a total of more than 2.1 million infecti...

German Corona Consultation Merkel and Prime Ministers Brought Forward

According to German media, Chancellor Angela Merkel wants even stricter corona measures. That is why her next consultation with the state ministers about the coronavirus spread will be brought forward.   It is now held on Tuesday instead of the last week of January. In Merkel's view, the Germans do not adhere to the corona measures that are often determined and enforced by the German federal system at the state level. Some media say that Merkel wants to push a 'mega-lockdown' through it on Tuesday. The stricter policy would, among other things, close childcare and educational institutions ultimately, limit people's freedom of movement even more in time and distance and would put economic life at an even lower ebb. Especially the latter fear many in the capital and the federal sta...

German Health Workers Obtain An Overdose of Corona Vaccine

The German corona vaccination campaign has been overshadowed by an incident in the north of the country. There, eight employees of a retirement home were given an overdose of the vaccine.   According to Vorpommern-RĂ¼gen district authorities, health workers in the city of Stralsund were given five times the recommended dose of the BioNTech-Pfizer vaccine on Sunday. Four of them were taken to the hospital for comment after developing flu-like signs. "I deeply regret the incident. This separate case is due to individual errors. I hope that everyone involved will not experience serious side effects," district chief Stefan Kerth said in a statement. The incident comes as some German districts have said they will not use the corona vaccines from Pfizer and BioNTech that were disseminat...

Hackers Target German Weapons Manufacturers

Hackers have been trying to steal data from major German weapon manufacturers in recent months.   The German television channels BR and ARD report based on their own research that it concerns the hacker group Lazarus, which works in the service of North Korea. Two of the affected companies are Rheinmetall and Renk AG. They do not want to confirm the hacking attempts against the German media. They do say that there is a good defence system should hackers gain access to their network and systems. The German Information Technology Security Service (BSI) says Lazarus is trying to obtain important information through cyber espionage. "Germany does not share weapons or information with North Korea, and the North Koreans are trying to get the right knowledge by stealing data. to be able...

Fewer New Corona Infections After Weekend Reported in Germany

The number of new corona infections detected in Germany in 24 hours has dropped slightly after days of nearly thirty thousand new infections.   The Robert Koch Institute (RKI), the German counterpart of the RIVM, reported 16,362 new cases on Monday morning. The RKI reported Friday and Saturday that the number of infections in Germany had increased by more than 29,000 and 28,000 new cases. The number of new infections reported on Monday is usually lower because less testing is done on weekends, and fewer test results are passed on. A total of 1,337,078 people in Germany have now become infected. The number of people who died as a result of Covid-19 increased by 188 to 21,975. Chancellor Angela Merkel announced on Sunday that Germany would enter a stricter lockdown from next Wedne...

Chancellor Merkel Wants to Keep Ski Slopes Locked

German Chancellor Angela Merkel would prefer to see the ski slopes in the Alpine countries closed due to the coronavirus.   However, she expects that it will be difficult to reach agreements on this, especially with neighbouring Austria. "The ski season is coming. We will try to coordinate European whether the ski areas remain closed," Merkel said in the German parliament on Thursday, where the corona measures were debated. French President Emmanuel Macron and Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte have already announced that they want to keep the slopes closed. Austria wants to open the ski areas under strict corona conditions. The country says it misses out on 800 million euros in income per week if there are no winter sports and then demands compensation from the European Union...
