German Weekly Coronavirus Figures at the Lowest Level in Months

Germany is making progress in the fight against the coronavirus. For the first time since the end of October, less than 100 infections per 100,000 inhabitants have been detected in a week.

That weekly figure peaked in Germany on December 22, when it stood at 197.6.

It now stands at 98, reports the Robert Koch Institute, the German counterpart of the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM).

The German authorities are aiming to get the weekly figure below 50. They instituted a lockdown to achieve that.

Non-essential shops, catering establishments and schools had to close at the end of last year by order of the government. In any case, those restrictions will remain in effect until mid-February.

Germany has reported a total of more than 2.1 million infections. Almost 55,000 patients died from the coronavirus. In the Netherlands, the coronavirus has been diagnosed in almost 1 million people, of whom just under 14,000 have died.
