Catalonia Announces Stricter Corona Rules

The Spanish region of Catalonia has announced new corona measures that will take effect next Friday. In the region, including Barcelona, corona infections have risen rapidly in recent weeks.   Nightclubs, bars and cafes have to close, there will be a curfew from 1 a.m. to 6 a.m., and the maximum occupancy in restaurants will be significantly reduced. People are also allowed to receive fewer guests at home. The rules apply for a period of fifteen days. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez will hold an emergency meeting on Wednesday about the corona situation in the country with the leaders of the Spanish regions. The regions largely determine their own corona policy. The consultations are about possibly stricter measures, such as in Catalonia, and about harmonizing all the rules. S...

Life Sentence for Man Who Deliberately Drove into German Carnival Parade

A man in Germany has been sentenced to life in prison for deliberately driving a car into a carnival parade in the town of Volkmarsen last year.   About 90 people were injured, including dozens of children. According to prosecutors, the 31-year-old German wanted to kill as many people as possible on February 24, 2020. He drove into his victims at a speed of 50 or 60 kilometres per hour. His vehicle came to a stop after 42 meters. Witnesses overpowered the driver. The court in Kassel has found the man guilty of attempted murder, inflicting bodily harm and dangerous behaviour in traffic. Almost two years later, it is still unknown why the man entered the parade. German media report that he remained silent in court and also refused to talk to a psychiatric expert. He concluded that...

Microsoft Must Release Dead Man’s Hotmail and OneDrive Account to Family

Microsoft must give the parents and sisters of a man who died in July 2021 access to his Hotmail and OneDrive account. The Amsterdam District Court has determined this after summary proceedings brought against Microsoft by the relatives.   The family members had first corresponded with the tech giant themselves to gain access to the deceased's Microsoft user accounts. However, Microsoft informed the family by email on Oct. 7 that it would only consider whether the company could provide access under applicable law after receiving a court order. Microsoft defended itself by stating that the content of an (email) account is not good within the meaning of Article 3:1 of the Dutch Civil Code. "Even if the heirs had become a party to the Microsoft Services Agreement (MSA), that would not...

Germany Reports Highest Corona Death Toll in Nine Months

Germany reported 446 new corona-related deaths on Wednesday, the highest daily figure since mid-February. Hospitals are concerned about the many admissions of corona patients to intensive care.   There is a warning that the number of corona patients on ICs is threatening to exceed the peak of last winter. The head of an association for IC care, Gernot Marx, thinks the number of corona patients in intensive care units may rise to 6000 before Christmas, regardless of which corona measures are still taken. There are currently about 4600. In addition, about 1400 new corona patients were admitted to the ICs last week. The resurgence of the coronavirus has pushed the official death toll in Germany to nearly 102,000. The Robert Koch Institute for Disease Control (RKI) reported nearly 67,...

German Court Rules Strict Corona Measures Were Legal

The strict corona measures in Germany earlier this year were legal, the constitutional court in Karlsruhe has ruled.   In the spring, social contacts were restricted, a curfew was imposed, and schools were closed. The verdict could pave the way for new, stricter measures in the country. The measures were introduced in April during the third wave of contamination. According to the court, measures infringed several fundamental rights but were allowed because of "the extreme danger of the pandemic". Chancellor Angela Merkel and her intended successor Olaf Scholz will talk with the state prime ministers on Tuesday about tightening the corona measures. The consultation, which has been brought forward due to the verdict, comes at a time when the number of infections is rising rapidly, ...

New Corona Variant: Europe Wants Immediate Emergency Stop on Flights from South Africa

The European Commission, "in close consultation with Member States", will propose an immediate halt to air traffic with southern Africa due to a corona mutation detected there (B.1.1.529); Commission President Ursula von der Leyen tweeted Friday.   Several member states, including Germany and Italy, have already decided not to allow travellers from South Africa. The emergency stop that the European Commission wants can be used if the epidemiological situation in a country or region outside the European Union deteriorates rapidly, especially if it has to do with a new corona mutation. The measure does not normally apply to EU citizens or people who have lived in the EU for a long time. Several countries have already decided to ban air traffic from South Africa. For example, Germany...

European Commission Wants to Protect Voters from Sneaky Political Advertising

According to the European Commission, it must become more difficult to trick voters with sneaky, tailor-made political advertising. From now on, political advertisements must state who is behind it and how much has been paid for it, if it is up to the committee.   Advertisements on Facebook and other social media, for example, can play a harmful role in elections, the executive board of the European Union has noted. Politicians, parties and interest groups bombard voters they know to be receptive with biased, biased or downright misleading information. For example, things went wrong in the US presidential race between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton and in the Brexit referendum, but also in many other recent elections. Voters sometimes only see information from a certain angle, and...

EU Countries Put Migrant Carriers to Belarus on Hold

Travel organizations and airlines that cooperate in transferring asylum seekers via Belarus to the European Union must fear European sanctions. This threatens, among others, the EU's foreign affairs chief and the German foreign minister.   The countries from which the asylum seekers leave, such as Iraq and Lebanon, are now helping to stem the influx, notes Josep Borrell, the EU's highest-ranking diplomat. But the union also has travel agencies and airlines in its sights, he warns. Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko takes migrants from the Middle East, in particular, to direct them to neighbouring EU countries Poland, Lithuania and Latvia, the EU said. If airlines do not stop cooperating with this 'state-led people smuggling', "they will have to take harsh sanctions into acco...

Kremlin Promises Gas will Continue to Flow to EU as Usual

Russia continues to pump gas to Europe and adhere to the quantities laid down in contracts. Therefore, Russia is and remains a reliable supplier, a government spokesperson emphasized.   He said that after the leader of neighbouring Belarus, President Alexander Lukashenko, threatened to close gas pipelines. Belarus is located between Russia and the European Union. An estimated one-fifth of the gas used in Europe this year was Russian and was funnelled west via Belarus. The spokesman said Lukashenko did not pre-align his threats with the Kremlin's views.
