More Leaders Express Support After the Vienna Attack

Several world leaders responded on Tuesday morning to the attack in Vienna on Monday evening.   German Chancellor Angela Merkel said the city had become the target of terrorist violence and that Germany stands alongside Austria in the fight against "radical Islamic terrorism". "In these terrible hours, when Vienna has been the target of terrorist violence, my thoughts are with the people there and the security forces facing the danger," Merkel said in a statement on Twitter. She says the fight against radical Islamic terrorism is a "joint fight". Israeli President Reuven Rivlin also condemned the attack on Twitter. "Our thoughts and prayers are with the Austrians as we look with concern at the despicable terrorist attack in Vienna," he writes. Earlier, Prime Minister Mark Rutte, ...

Number of Hospital Admissions in Belgium Towards 3000

Corona rates in Belgium continue to rise across the country. Nearly 3,000 Covid-19 patients have been admitted to Belgian hospitals, virologist Steven Van Gucht said during a press conference of the health authorities.   There may be first signs that the spread of the virus is slowing down. The number of new infections doubles every nine days, compared to every seven days last week, according to Van Gucht. There were 2,969 people in the hospital on Tuesday. According to the latest figures, an average of 295 people was admitted each day between October 14 and 20, an increase of 94 percent from the previous week. On average, 8975, new corona cases were added daily. By the way, the laboratories stopped testing people who have no symptoms on Tuesday due to under capacity. The provinc...

EU Ministers Agree on European Coronavirus Colour Map

There will be one colour-coded card in the EU that shows the danger of the coronavirus for every European region.   The ECDC, the European counterpart of the RIVM, will update the map every week, the EU foreign ministers in Luxembourg have agreed. Member States report to the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) every week how many new infections have been detected, how many corona tests have been conducted and how many of them turned out to be positive. ECDC has set standards for subsequently colouring regions green, orange or red. In this way, people who travel there know how much danger they are. But whether travellers have to undergo a test or quarantine, for example, remains up to the Member States themselves. They disagree. The differences between a cou...

Irish McGuinness Appointed Member of the European Commission

EU Foreign Ministers have appointed Mairead McGuinness as a member of the European Commission.   The 61-year-old Irishman gets the portfolio of financial services, financial stability and the capital markets union. Her term of office ends on October 31, 2024. Last week, the European Parliament already gave its confidence by an overwhelming majority of votes to McGuinness, a member of the EU Parliament since 2004 and the leader of the Christian Democratic group. Since 2017 she has been First Vice-President of Parliament. In August, she was nominated by the Irish government to succeed European Commissioner Phil Hogan (Trade). Hogan had fallen out of favour after violating corona rules in his own country and then resigned to the EU executive. Commission President Ursula von der Leye...

Svetlana Tikhanovskaya Calls for Continued Pressure on Lukashenko’s Regime

Svetlana Tikhanovskaya, the Belarusian opposition leader, has called on European countries in Berlin to continue to put pressure on President Aleksandr Lukashenko's regime.   She asks the European Union to impose even more sanctions. Tichanovskaya has raised in a press conference in Berlin that the pressure on Lukashenko's regime must be exerted both inside and outside Belarus. In addition to the demonstrations of hundreds of thousands of Belarusians, she calls on all leaders to make their voices heard. "Our country needs different kinds of assistance, but we especially need mediation to initiate dialogue with our authorities and negotiations, so I am sure that Ms Angela Merkel will be very helpful in this situation," said Tikhanovskaya. Last week, European heads of state or gov...

European Commission Warns Against Rapprochement With Russia

Anyone who seeks rapprochement with Russia must be careful, the European Commission warns.   The poisoning of the Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny "does not stand alone", but fits in "a pattern," said President Ursula von der Leyen. The committee chairman does not see anything in strengthening the ties with the big neighbour, as the French President Emmanuel Macron, for example, regularly suggests. She points to the pattern of ruthless aggression against Kremlin opponents "in Georgia, Ukraine, Syria and Salisbury" and attempts to "manipulate elections around the world. This pattern is not changing. And no pipeline will change that," warned Von der Leyen with reference to the gas pipeline on which Russia works together with European countries. In order to make a fist on t...

EU Presidents Denounce Violence Against Belarusian Protesters

The Presidents of the European Commission and the European Council have criticized the violence against demonstrators in Belarus.   Ursula von der Leyen and Charles Michel call on the autocratic regime in Minsk to respect fundamental rights and freedoms. During and after Sunday's presidential elections, clashes between police and protesters took place in numerous places in Belarus. About 3000 protesters have been arrested. A protester would also have been killed and dozens injured. The Electoral Commission has declared incumbent President Alexander Lukashenko the winner. Opposition leader and rival candidate Svetlana Tichanovskaja do not recognize the result and calls for a recount of the votes. There is no place in Europe for the violent repression of peaceful protesters, Von de...

EU is Making Euro 33 Million Available for Emergency Aid to Lebanon

The European Commission is allocating 33 million euros for aid to Lebanon after the devastating explosion that hit the capital Beirut on Tuesday.   The money is intended, among other things, for basic needs, medical equipment and the restoration of critical infrastructure. This is the first amount, committee chairman Ursulavon der Leyen announced on Thursday after a telephone conversation with Lebanese Prime Minister Hassan Diab. She conveyed condolences and expressed support to the Lebanese people. The two also discussed how the EU could help rebuild Beirut and the rest of the country. Von der Leyen suggested the possibility of charting damage with European expertise and equipment. She also suggested boosting trade relations by offering benefits to the affected country. The Pre...

Spanish Unemployment is Rising Again Due to the Corona Crisis

Spanish unemployment rose in the second quarter as a result of the corona crisis. The Spanish statistics agency has calculated this.   Unemployment has declined in recent years, but this has now come to an end. The number of unemployed rose by 55,000 to just under 3.4 million people. This brings unemployment to 15.3 percent. In the first quarter of this year, this was still 14.4 percent. However, the actual figures could be even higher because, during the lockdown in the country, people were unable to look for work actively. They, therefore, did not meet the definition of unemployment used by the statistical office. This could apply to up to 1.1 million people. Employees who are temporarily at home and paid via a government schedule, about 1.8 million people do not count as unemp...
