Myanmar government leader Aung San Suu Kyi, who was deposed by the military, has appeared in criminal court and charged with violating a law governing the export and import of products.
She risks three years in prison. Suu Kyi and deposed president Win Myint have been remanded in custody for at least 15 days, independent internet media reported.
The former president would be accused of flouting corona measures and breaking the law on natural disasters. The charges against Suu Kyi, according to arraignment circles, stem from a search of her in the capital, Naypyitaw, where “illegally imported electronic equipment” has been found.
The army seized power on Monday after elections were held in which Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy was the big winner. The party on which the mighty army top counted lost ignominiously. Myanmar has about 54 million inhabitants and was previously known as Burma.
The military seized power in 1962 and established a communist-style totalitarian state. They did not release the reins until half a century later. Suu Kyi was the head of government and foreign minister since 2016.
