Meta Temporarily Allows Hate Speech to Russian Leaders

Meta, the parent company above Facebook and Instagram, will make a temporary exception to its guidelines on hateful and violent language.   Because of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, it will not remove calls for violence against Russian leaders in certain countries, the company ruled on Thursday. According to Reuters news agency, posts calling for the death of Russian President Vladimir Putin or his Belarusian ally Alexander Lukashenko, for example, will not be removed in Russia, Ukraine and Poland, among others. According to an internal email sent to Reuters, the temporary relaxation also applies to Armenia, Azerbaijan, Estonia, Georgia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Romania and Slovakia. "We are tolerant of certain political statements that normally violate our rules," Meta spoke...

Apple Unveils New iPhone SE and iPad Air

As expected, Apple presented new versions of its 'budget iPhone' and the iPad Air during an online event. There were no big surprises with these gadgets, except that the iPad Air now also has an M1 processor on board and that the iPhone SE has become significantly more expensive.   In our preview at the Apple event, we wrote that the iPhone SE is so popular, among other things, because of its (for an iPhone). We had expected a bit more storage capacity for that money, but the entry-level model still starts at 64 GB. In addition, there are also versions of 128 and 256 GB. What is new is the A15 Bionic processor, and that is the same power source that resides in the iPhone 13. Also included in the price are 5G, an improved camera of 12 megapixels and a battery that lasts a little lon...

European Astronauts Want Their Own Ship

Astronauts call on the European Space Agency (ESA) to develop their own rockets to launch humans into space. Currently, European astronauts join missions from other countries and companies.   The Association of Space Explorers, the interest group of European astronauts, asks European politicians to invest in their own crew capsules. This will allow ESA to carry out manned flights itself. That is not possible with current missiles. If European astronauts want to go into space, this is currently done by buying seats on rockets from, for example, Russia or the company SpaceX. ESA's own missiles, such as the Ariane 5, do not allow manned flights. According to the interest group, the time has come for Europe to build its own infrastructure around this. "European leaders must urgently d...

Western Digital Factory Flaw Renders 6.5 Exabytes of Flash Memory Useless

Storage manufacturer Western Digital has discovered that errors have occurred in two of its factories, resulting in the loss of an enormous amount of flash memory, including used in SSDs.   The company does not provide many technical details, but Western Digital speaks of contamination of certain materials in its factories in Yokkaichi and Kitakami. Both Japanese sites are operated in a joint venture with Kioxia, the former Toshiba. WD says it is still working closely with Kioxia to keep the factories running as smoothly as possible. However, because it concerns the factories mentioned above, The Verge knows that it concerns CiCS 3D NAND flash memory. Together, the two companies account for about 30 percent of the NAND flash memory market. Market analyst TrendForce expects the inc...

Samsung Comes With New Flagships

Samsung has presented its latest high-end devices. In addition to the Samsung Galaxy S22 and S22+, this also includes an Ultra device that should make the Note forget.   The technological focus of the Galaxy S22 and S22+ is on the camera, as was the case with previous editions. As expected, the new version builds on incremental improvements. Both models have a powerful 50MP main camera, 10MP telephoto lens and 12MP ultra-wide angle lens. In addition, intelligent image processing should allow you to take beautiful photos under almost all circumstances. Also at night, with, for example, a Nightography function and a sensor that is 23% larger than that in the S21 model. Even more interesting for those who want to turn their cat into an Instagram model, Samsung reports that Portrait mo...

Facebook is No Longer Growing

Social platform users are in decline for the first time in recent history. The share price has also fallen sharply. What is going on?   On the stock exchange in New York, the share of Facebook parent Meta Platforms fell by 23 percent in the so-called after-hours trading. It is about the first time since the IPO ten years ago that the share has not increased in value every year, with one exception. So that immediately drops 23% is unprecedented. As a result, the company was (temporarily) worth about $ 200 billion less in one fell swoop. The fall in prices follows troubling messages for shareholders during the presentation of the quarterly figures of Meta. For example, it is the first time that the number of monthly users of Facebook has dropped. That number has fallen from 1.930 bil...

Group Conversations Facebook Messenger Now (Optional) Encrypted

Facebook Messenger now allows group conversations, both written and spoken, to be encrypted. You will also receive notifications if someone takes a screenshot of a disappearing conversation.   Encryption in Messenger has been around since 2016, but it took Facebook years to expand that function to include group conversations. From now on, this is possible, although it is an optional function. At the same time, the option to send disappearing chat messages is expanded with screenshot notifications. If the other party takes a screenshot of your disappearing text, you will be warned. Facebook, meanwhile renamed Meta, has been planning to encrypt more communications for years, but that is going very slowly. In 2016, it started with one-on-one Messenger conversations. But only since la...

US States Sue Google for Unauthorized Data Collection

The attorneys general of several US states, including Texas, Indiana and Washington D.C., are suing internet giant Google to obtain users' location data through deceptive tactics.   Google used that data to advertise in a more targeted way. Prosecutors say the unauthorized data collection took place from 2014 to at least 2019 on smartphones running Google's Android operating system and other apps and web services from the internet giant. In addition, Google continued to track the location of users' smartphones, even though they had disabled that feature, via the separate 'Web & App Activity' account settings. "In reality, regardless of the settings they choose, consumers who use Google products have no option but to allow the company to collect, store and use their location," ...

Google Stops Free G Suite

Until now, early users of Google's G Suite could use their own domain name for free. However, the tech giant now says that that is coming to an end, with major consequences for early customers.   Google says it will discontinue the free version of G Suite that allowed businesses to use their own domain name. Those who signed up for the service between 2006 and 2012 could use G Suite with their own domain name. So, for example, you could email from your company name instead of 'gmail.com'. The service to set up free domain names for G Suite was already deprecated in 2012, but companies that already had one have been able to use it until now. So that is about to change. Those companies that use the free version of G Suite will have to pay for it from May. Google has sent emails to "G...

No VR Headset from Apple for the Time Being

Apple may have to delay the debut of its virtual reality headset. There are problems with the development of the glasses, with which, among other things, virtual objects can be projected into the real world.   That reports financial news agency Bloomberg based on insiders. There would still be problems with the gadget's software and camera. The glasses could also overheat. Nevertheless, the VR headset should become Apple's first major new product since the Apple Watch was launched in 2015. According to Bloomberg, the American tech company has been working on the glasses since about that year. The delay would be a setback for Apple, which has never officially announced the headset. The presentation is now scheduled for the end of this year. It may then take until 2023 before the g...
