Facebook Parent Company Wants to Change Name

The social networks Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, Facebook Inc., will soon be renamed the parent company. That reports the American technology blog The Verge on Tuesday.   CEO Mark Zuckerberg is expected to explain that name change for the company, which has been under fire on several fronts for some time, at the company's annual Connect conference next Thursday. According to The Verge, the new name will focus on the metaverse, a recent concept that describes the next generation of the internet. The metaverse is a universe in which all virtual spaces are connected. As far as Zuckerberg is concerned, the virtual reality services that Facebook already offers with Oculus should play a major role in that vision. In July, Zuckerberg said he expects that in the coming years, "people...

European Court Finds Detention for Mocking Erdogan Going Too Far

Turkey has dealt way too harshly with a man allegedly mocked by President Erdogan on Facebook. That is the opinion of the European Court of Human Rights, which orders the Turkish authorities to pay compensation of EUR 7500 to the victim.   The case was brought by Vedat Sorli, who was arrested in his own country for allegedly insulting Erdogan with his posts on social media. For example, in 2014, he shared an image showing Erdogan in a dress. The Turkish leader kisses then US President Barack Obama on that cartoon. In Turkey, insulting the president is punishable by up to four years in prison. Sorli was in pre-trial detention for about two months and was eventually given a suspended prison sentence of almost a year. He had already appealed in his own country, but it was rejected. T...

Sydney Reopens to Tourists, Rest of Australia Remains Closed

Vaccinated foreign travellers will fly to Sydney in Australia next month without having to be quarantined upon arrival. In addition, the state of New South Wales announced on Friday that it would reopen its international borders, although they remain closed in the rest of the country.   To date, only Australians or permanent residents of Australia can enter the country, subject to a 14-day quarantine obligation. But New South Wales, which recently came out of lockdown and where more than 70 percent of the eligible population has been vaccinated, has now taken the lead in changing the rules. From 1 November, foreigners will be able to fly to Sydney Airport to demonstrate that they have been vaccinated and present a negative corona test before boarding. In that case, they will be exe...

Chinese Industry Sales Prices Rise at Record Pace

Producer prices in China's manufacturing industry rose at their strongest ever pace in September due to high energy and raw material costs.   There are also shortages of certain materials on top of that. Moreover, soaring sales prices in the world's largest exporting country could also further fuel inflation worldwide, as Chinese exporters pass the higher costs on to customers. Producer prices rose by 10.7 percent compared to a year earlier, according to the Chinese statistical office. That is the strongest increase since the start of the measurements in 1996. The figure is also stronger than economists had expected. In August, producer prices in China already climbed by 9.5 percent. Chinese manufacturers are dealing with very sharp increases in the price of coal and electricity a...

Bali Airport Open to Some Tourists, 5 Days of Quarantine

The airport of Bali will receive international flights again from Thursday after months. After arrival in Indonesia, five days of quarantine is mandatory, three days less than before. Residents of eighteen countries are welcome, but which ones have not been announced.   Due to the corona pandemic, the island, which is very popular with tourists, was closed to foreign travellers for months. Still, the number of infections in Indonesia has steadily decreased in recent weeks. Bali's chief of tourism does not expect a large flow of tourists in the coming days. "The timing is too abrupt," he said, according to the Bali Post. "Maybe we'll see more tourists in November." Foreigners from the eighteen countries, all of which are known to exclude Singapore, can once again apply for a touris...

London Police Stop Investigating Prince Andrew in Abuse Case

The London police stopped their investigation into the abuse case in which the British Prince Andrew (61), the second son of the Queen, is said to be involved.   Although, he is being sued in the United States by a victim of American billionaire Jeffrey Epstein, Prince Andrew also abused her. Therefore, it is not entirely clear why the London police will not take further steps. Virginia Giuffre (38) is an alleged victim of American billionaire Jeffrey Epstein, a former friend of Prince Andrew. Epstein and his British partner Ghislaine Maxwell are said to have recruited underage girls and placed them in a network of sexual exploitation. Although Epstein was charged in the US two years ago, he died in his cell awaiting trial. Giuffre says she was introduced to Prince Andrew through ...

Grid Penalty for Driver Hamilton in Turkish Grand Prix

Formula 1 driver Lewis Hamilton will receive a ten-place grid penalty in the Turkish Grand Prix on Sunday.   FIA's umbrella organisation announced that Mercedes had mounted a new combustion engine in Hamilton's car, his fourth of this season. The drivers are allowed to use three engines in a season, after which a grid penalty follows. However, because Mercedes has only replaced part of the entire power source for the time being, the penalty for Hamilton is limited to ten places back on the grid. Max Verstappen had to go all the way back on the grid two weeks ago in Russia because he got a completely new engine in his Red Bull. Hamilton is currently leading the battle for the world title, with a small lead over Verstappen. Saturday is the qualification for the race, which will be ...
