WHO: 160,000 More European Deaths Than Normal in Two Months

In 24 European countries, between the beginning of March and the end of May, about 159,000 more people died than usual during that time frame.   A "significant portion" of that number is linked to the new coronavirus, the World Health Organization (WHO) said Thursday. "What we have seen very clearly is that the spike in deaths has to do with the transmission of Covid-19," said Katie Smallwood of WHO. She stressed that countries that are currently easing corona measures should primarily be able to "trace and test" the coronavirus to keep a second wave at bay. For example, the WHO states that opening bars, companies and discos can bring new risks. To cope with that, a country's health care system must have "robust capability". In Europe, more than 2 million people have been infect...

In the capital New Delhi, temperatures have been measured of 47.6 degrees. That means that it is the hottest day in May in 18 years. It was even hotter in the northern city of Churu. The UN World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has called on governments to consider measures to ensure human safety in the event of a heatwave during the corona crisis. A spokeswoman emphasized this week that it is one of the hottest years ever recorded. Measures often taken wi...

Relatively Few Additional Deaths From Corona in Germany

The number of additional deaths from the coronavirus is relatively small in Germany. According to figures, an average of 8 percent more people died than usual in a given period.   The researchers compared a week in April with death rates from the past four years. At least 18,693 people died in the Federal Republic between April 13 and 19, 8 percent more than in the years 2016 to 2019. Because the latest flu wave has ended since mid-March, the scientists blame the increase on the corona epidemic. By comparison, Italy reported nearly 50 percent more deaths in March than average in the years 2015 to 2019. In the Swedish capital Stockholm and the surrounding region, doubling of the normal death rate was reported in early April. In France, the number of deaths from March 1 to May 4 ...
