WikiLeaks Founder Julian Assange Will Not Be Released on Parole

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange will not be released on parole. The judge in London decided that.

Assange recorded a legal victory earlier this week when a British court stopped his extradition to the United States. There, he faces a 175-year prison sentence for publishing confidential documents.

The US is appealing to get Assange extradited and did not want him to be released on parole. A US government attorney warned that the WikiLeaks founder could flee again.

For example, Mexico has offered him political asylum.

49-year-old Assange also attempted to be released. He wanted to await his extradition case outside of prison. The judge did not see this at the time because he was seen as a flight risk. For example, in 2012 Assange fled to the Ecuadorian embassy in London while on parole.

The Ecuadorian government dismissed him after seven years, after which the British police arrested him.
