Boris Johnson Under Fire for Outrageous Joke about Thatcher and the Coal Mines

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson is under fire after a visit to Scotland Thursday. Johnson made a joke that has gone down the wrong way with many compatriots. "Shameful", Scottish politicians call it.   Johnson had just visited a wind farm in Scotland's Moray East on Thursday when some journalists asked him about the energy transition in the United Kingdom. The Prime Minister replied that a lot of progress had already been made, adding a joke. "Thanks to Margaret Thatcher, who has closed a large number of coal mines across the country, we have started early and are now getting rid of that coal quickly," he said with a laugh. But the closure of the coal mines is not something to be laughed at by the Scots. It was the UK's main industrial sector, and when Thatcher decided to clos...

France Tightens Rules for Travellers to UK, Spain and Portugal

France is tightening the corona rules for travellers from the United Kingdom, Spain and Portugal. From now on, the corona test for unvaccinated people must be taken no more than 24 hours before travel.   For other countries, a maximum time frame of 72 hours still applies. The French Minister of European Affairs, Clement Beaune, reports this after the statements of President Emmanuel Macron. It announced Monday evening that the rules for travellers from risk areas would be tightened but did not share any details yet. France requires travellers to prove testing if they have not yet been fully vaccinated with a corona vaccine approved by the European Medicines Agency (EMA) or have demonstrably recovered from Covid-19. Unvaccinated travellers from outside the European Union, includin...

UK: Criticism of Contradicting Statements on the Mask Requirement

Corona infections are increasing in Great Britain, but London is sticking to its easing plans. There is now also confusion on the subject of masks. Some call for "personal responsibility", others want to get rid of it quickly.   The British government has come under increasing criticism for contradicting messages about wearing masks after the planned end of all corona measures. "I think it's pretty confusing for people what the right thing to do now," Warwick University Infectious Disease Expert Mike Tildesley told BBC television on Monday. He hoped enough people weighed the risks themselves not to be a massive increase in infections. The immunologist Peter Openshaw from Imperial College London criticized the planned lifting of the mask requirement on the BBC 4 radio station. It is...

Putin: British Naval Ship Wanted to Test Russian Response

The British naval vessel that Moscow said illegally entered Russian waters in the Black Sea near Crimea earlier this month did so to observe in detail the response of Russian forces. President Vladimir Putin said so on Wednesday.   "This was, of course, a provocation," Putin said in his annual televised question-and-answer session after the British ambassador in Moscow had previously been questioned. "Even if we had sunk the British destroyer near Crimea, it is unlikely that the world would have been on the brink of World War III," he added. The warship HMS Defender sailed in a maritime zone that most countries consider belonging to Ukraine, but the Russians have claimed that sea area since the annexation of Crimea in 2014. According to the recent discovery of confidential military...

Charles Still Supported Harry and Meghan Financially After Their Departure

Prince Charles did support his son Prince Harry financially after he and Meghan Markle renounced the British royal family.   According to Harry, however, the money tap was immediately turned off at the beginning of last year when he left for the US. But that's not right. Documents with which the royal family has to account for its income and expenses, however, show that Charles still gave money to his youngest son. The heir apparent gave £4.5 million from his private income to his sons Harry and William last year. A portion was used to help Harry and his wife Meghan, a spokesperson said. The financial support did stop last summer.

British Regulator Investigates Apple and Google Power

The British market regulator Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) will further investigate the strong dominant position of the tech companies Apple and Google in mobile phone operating systems and app stores.   According to the CMA, consumers can be disadvantaged by this dominant position in various areas. The competition watchdog is examining the iOS operating system from Apple and Android from Google and the App Store and Play Store and the web browsers Safari and Chrome. It looks at whether the two companies' control over these so-called "mobile ecosystems" undermines competition. The CMA is concerned that, for example, innovation will be reduced, and consumers will have to pay more for mobile devices, apps and other services. The study, lasting up to 12 months, will also l...

Joe Biden Talks to Boris Johnson about Special Relationship

US President Joe Biden will meet British Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Thursday in Carbis Bay in Cornwall, England. It is the first leader to speak to Biden on his first foreign trip as president.   It will be a man-to-man conversation with no officials or ministers, which is pretty much a tradition in US-UK relations that presidents and prime ministers invariably refer to as a special relationship. Biden will give the impression that his country is entirely back and reliable in world politics after his predecessor Donald Trump. The latter wanted to focus on domestic affairs. Biden and Johnson have not met as far as is known, and previously Biden dismissed British Conservative politician Johnson as a "physical and emotional clone of Trump". Biden will also reportedly elaborate o...

Englishmen Who Go on Holiday Risk A Fine of £ 5000

The British government is introducing a hefty fine for British people who go on holiday abroad during corona time.   It concerns an amount of 5000 pounds. Not only holidaymakers risk such a fine. Under the new legislation, this can be imposed on anyone who leaves the country without a valid reason. The new rules have yet to be approved by parliament and will then remain in effect until June 30, Sky News reports. Chances are, however, that the English will be able to enjoy a holiday abroad before that date. Health Minister Matt Hancock does not rule out the premature relaxation of the rules for international travel. He thought it was too early to anticipate this because the coronavirus seems to be spreading more quickly in parts of Europe. The new law states that no one may "leav...

British Furious After Von Der Leyen Threat to Stop Export of Vaccines

By threatening to stop the export of vaccines to the United Kingdom, the European Commission behaves "like a dictatorship".   British Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab said this after Ursula von der Leyen's speech. The German president of the European Commission had said that the European Union plans to stop sending vaccines to the United Kingdom if that country doesn't send vaccines the other way. Von der Leyen is also of the opinion that no more vaccines should go to countries at the forefront of vaccination. By that, she meant the United Kingdom. Brussels wants Oxford vaccines from AstraZeneca produced on British soil to come to the European mainland. This demand has surprised the British as half of the 14.8 million Oxford vaccines on the mainland are unused. On the other hand, th...

British Health Minister Happy With the Speed of Vaccinations

British health minister Matt Hancock is pleased with the pace of vaccinations in the country and notes that the first phase has been successfully completed.   Everyone over the age of 70 has been offered a vaccination, and 90 percent has responded positively to the offer. The country is now moving to the second phase of the vaccination program for the 65-70 age group. Most of the other target groups of phase one have also been vaccinated. They are social workers, employees in health facilities, and other National Health Service (NHS). Hancock called it "a milestone on the road to freedom for all of us". Prime Minister Boris Johnson spoke over the weekend of 15 million vaccinations delivered faster than expected while the number of new infection cases is falling significantly. Hanc...
