German Health Workers Obtain An Overdose of Corona Vaccine

The German corona vaccination campaign has been overshadowed by an incident in the north of the country. There, eight employees of a retirement home were given an overdose of the vaccine.   According to Vorpommern-RĂ¼gen district authorities, health workers in the city of Stralsund were given five times the recommended dose of the BioNTech-Pfizer vaccine on Sunday. Four of them were taken to the hospital for comment after developing flu-like signs. "I deeply regret the incident. This separate case is due to individual errors. I hope that everyone involved will not experience serious side effects," district chief Stefan Kerth said in a statement. The incident comes as some German districts have said they will not use the corona vaccines from Pfizer and BioNTech that were disseminat...

France Will Approve Corona Vaccine for Saturday

France will approve the corona vaccine from Pfizer and BioNTech before Boxing Day (Saturday).   Health Minister Olivier Veran said on Tuesday that the French medicine watchdog is working on it. Veran said earlier that France would start vaccinating people against the coronavirus on Sunday. People with poor health are the first to be vaccinated. The health minister also said on Tuesday that there is as yet no evidence that the new mutation of the coronavirus is circulating in France. He did not want to rule that out on Monday.

European Commission Call: Start Vaccination in the EU at the Same Time

The countries of the European Union should simultaneously start vaccinating their populations against the coronavirus, the European Commission believes.   "Let's start on the same day, as we have come through this pandemic with one accord," said Chairman Ursula von der Leyen. There is finally good news, Von der Leyen noted with delight in the European Parliament. "Within a week, the first vaccine will be approved, so that the vaccination can start immediately.". " The good news about the upcoming Pfizer vaccine approval doesn't mean the end of the corona crisis is already in sight, von der Leyen warned. "But we have the prospect to do something about it again, and we have hope."

Fewer New Corona Infections After Weekend Reported in Germany

The number of new corona infections detected in Germany in 24 hours has dropped slightly after days of nearly thirty thousand new infections.   The Robert Koch Institute (RKI), the German counterpart of the RIVM, reported 16,362 new cases on Monday morning. The RKI reported Friday and Saturday that the number of infections in Germany had increased by more than 29,000 and 28,000 new cases. The number of new infections reported on Monday is usually lower because less testing is done on weekends, and fewer test results are passed on. A total of 1,337,078 people in Germany have now become infected. The number of people who died as a result of Covid-19 increased by 188 to 21,975. Chancellor Angela Merkel announced on Sunday that Germany would enter a stricter lockdown from next Wedne...

Hungary and Poland Have Accepted A Compromise Proposal on the EU Budget

Hungary and Poland have accepted a compromise proposal on the EU budget and the Corona Recovery Fund with some reserve.   Rotating EU president Germany has been trying to find a way out of the stalemate on this for some time. The two countries are holding back approval so far because the plans provide that violators could lose their EU subsidies if they violate the rule of law. The content of the compromise has not been disclosed. It is first presented to the Netherlands and other countries that do not want the water to be compromised when it comes to respect for the rule of law. According to a Polish government official, the goal is to reach an agreement before the heads of government meet in Brussels on Thursday afternoon for their December summit. An earlier compromise proposa...

A Standstill of Corona Infections Worries Belgian Virologists

The decline in the number of Belgians contracting the coronavirus appears to be halting. Some more corona patients were even admitted to the hospital.   "That is a bit worrisome," says virologist Steven Van Gucht, who speaks on behalf of the Belgian corona crisis centre. Van Gucht sees "still a slight decrease" in the number of corona infections and hospital admissions. "But if we look at the last three days like this, we can almost speak of a stabilization", certainly in Flanders and the province of Luxembourg. It is still guesswork what exactly is going on, the virologist said at a new press conference from the crisis centre. He does not rule out that Belgians who go to work or shop across the border in the Netherlands and Luxembourg, where the coronavirus is currently more pre...

Last Year the EU Issued Three Million Residence Permits

Last year, EU countries issued three million residence permits to non-EU citizens. One-third of this was for people from Ukraine, Morocco and India who came to live in the EU to work, study or join the family.   Since 2013, the number of residence permits issued in the EU has been growing steadily. In 2019, this was an increase of 6 percent, or 163,000 people, compared to the previous year, the European statistics office reports. On average, 41 percent of all residence permits in the EU were related to work and 27 percent to family. With a quarter of all residence permits issued by the EU countries in 2019, Poland led the way. The vast majority there, 551,000 of the 625,000 residence permits, were for Ukrainians who moved to their neighbouring country for work. Germany, Spain, Fr...

Chancellor Merkel Wants to Keep Ski Slopes Locked

German Chancellor Angela Merkel would prefer to see the ski slopes in the Alpine countries closed due to the coronavirus.   However, she expects that it will be difficult to reach agreements on this, especially with neighbouring Austria. "The ski season is coming. We will try to coordinate European whether the ski areas remain closed," Merkel said in the German parliament on Thursday, where the corona measures were debated. French President Emmanuel Macron and Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte have already announced that they want to keep the slopes closed. Austria wants to open the ski areas under strict corona conditions. The country says it misses out on 800 million euros in income per week if there are no winter sports and then demands compensation from the European Union...

The Number of New Corona Infections in Germany is Rising Sharply

The number of new corona infections detected in the last 24 hours has skyrocketed in Germany to 18,633, reports the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), the German counterpart of RIVM.   On Tuesday, 13,554 new infections were reported. The number of new infections reported on Tuesday meant that a three-day decline in the number of new corona cases in Germany came to an end. The number of new cases fell by about 5,000 a day from about 23,000 on Saturday to about 16,000 on Sunday and about 11,000 on Monday. Now the number of new infections seems to be increasing at almost the same rate. The death toll in Germany ran fast in the past 24 hours with 410 deaths. The corona epidemic has now claimed the lives of 14,771 people in total, according to official figures.

Second Corona Wave in Belgium Seems to Be Over

The decline in the number of new coronavirus infections in Belgium continues. The number of hospital admissions and admissions to intensive care units also continues to decline.   "We see the declines in all age groups," said virologist Steven Van Gucht at a crisis centre press conference. According to Van Gucht, it seems that "the efforts of everyone" avoid the worst conceivable scenario in the healthcare sector. He hopes that the number of patients on ICs will no longer increase, but the situation in hospitals is still "challenging". Currently, 7058 people are in hospital, 1470 of whom are in ICs. For the first time since September, the number of corona patients required to be admitted to intensive care continued to decrease slightly daily averaged over a week. For the first ti...
