Ebola Congo: Due to the Flared-up Violence, We Have to Start Almost from Scratch

In Eastern Congo people were well on their way to end the Ebola epidemic after eighteen months. But due to a flare-up of violence, new people became infected.   Ebola has not yet been challenged in Eastern Congo, that much is clear. The epidemic, which has now been going on for a year and a half, has already killed more than 2,300. Although the disease seemed as good as fought, 16 infections appeared again last week. The flare-up violence is the cause of this. "We now have to start almost from scratch," says Dr Jean-Jacques Muyembe, the national Ebola coordinator. Ebola is one of the biggest challenges for President Félix Tshisekedi, who has been in power in Congo for one year now.

Run Away Ebola Patients in Congo Found Dead

Two Ebola patients who had run away from a hospital in the Congolese city of Mbandaka were found dead today. Another patient, who had fled the hospital on Saturday, was found alive that same day. The three patients were in quarantine.   The head of MSF's mission in the city reacted to the incident. The hospital is not a prison, he said, the patients cannot be locked up, says eMedium. The report about the fledged patients coincides with the warning from the World Health Organization that the fight against the highly contagious disease has reached a critical point. It is the ninth time that Ebola erupted in Congo. In the coming weeks, it must be clear whether the disease can be kept under control. So far, 27 Congolese have succumbed to Ebola.
