The number of Covid-19 positively tested Suriname persons will increase to around one hundred to one hundred and twenty cases per day over the next two weeks. After that, a decrease will start.
At least that is the expectation of the Surinamese authorities, they announced during a press conference in Paramaribo on Sunday evening.
To make this forecast a reality, it is essential, according to Minister Amar Ramadhin of Public Health, that the Surinamese stick to the corona measures in the coming weeks. Only then is there a chance of a decrease in the number of cases, the minister said.
To achieve this goal, the current measures, such as the curfew between 7 pm and 5 am, will apply for at least another week. Although the number of infections will undoubtedly increase in the coming weeks, according to the minister, it will not have consequences for other patients. Regular care will be able to continue as usual.
In recent weeks, the number of positive cases in Suriname has been between eighty and one hundred per day.
According to Ramadhin, the expected increase for the next two weeks can be directly traced back to last Christmas and New Years. According to the minister, many people did not adhere to the corona measures in those days but instead partied.
Suriname currently has 619 active infections. In the past 24 hours, sixty of the 238 people tested proved positive for Covid-19. The number of people in intensive care is thirteen, while the counter for Suriname deaths stands at 133. The total number of positive cases since the start of the corona outbreak now stands at 7008.
