China will never let its sovereignty, security or development interests undermine. Chinese President Xi Jinping said this in a speech in the Great Hall of the People in Beijing on Friday.
Xi spoke at the 70th anniversary of the deployment of Chinese troops to the Korean Peninsula during the war in 1950-1953. Beijing helped North Korea fight South Korea, backed by the US and the UN.
“Let the world know that the Chinese people are now organized and not to be trifled with,” Xi quoted the founder of the People’s Republic, Mao.
In October 1950, Chinese troops crossed the Green River that forms the border with North Korea. The Chinese soldiers received close air support from Russian aircraft. In all, Beijing sent 2 million soldiers to the peninsula.
The war ended in a truce in 1953 without a peace treaty. North and South Korea are therefore still technically at war with each other.
