Ukraine Proposes to Send Large Number of Rescue Workers to Turkey

Ukraine is ready to send "a large number of rescue workers" to Turkey to help search for victims of the deadly earthquake. That's what it said on Monday. Hundreds of Retired Turkish Admirals Acquitted

A group of 103 retired Turkish admirals were acquitted on Tuesday after President Recep Tayyip Erdogan accused them of preparing a coup last year. The state media report this. According to the state news agency Anadolu, the court ruled that there was no evidence of a crime. The public prosecutor had asked for 12 years in prison for each of the former admirals. They remained free pending trial. They had to go to court because they had signed an open letter in April last year asking them to comply with the Montreux Convention. That treaty, from 1936, aims to demilitarize the Black Sea by establishing strict rules for the passage of warships over the Bosphorus and Dardanelles. However, Erdogan wants to dig a new canal in Istanbul, west of the Bosphorus, to relieve them of one ...

European Court Finds Detention for Mocking Erdogan Going Too Far

Turkey has dealt way too harshly with a man allegedly mocked by President Erdogan on Facebook. That is the opinion of the European Court of Human Rights, which orders the Turkish authorities to pay compensation of EUR 7500 to the victim.   The case was brought by Vedat Sorli, who was arrested in his own country for allegedly insulting Erdogan with his posts on social media. For example, in 2014, he shared an image showing Erdogan in a dress. The Turkish leader kisses then US President Barack Obama on that cartoon. In Turkey, insulting the president is punishable by up to four years in prison. Sorli was in pre-trial detention for about two months and was eventually given a suspended prison sentence of almost a year. He had already appealed in his own country, but it was rejected. T...

Many buildings, roads and bridges have been destroyed. Thousands of people have been evacuated from the area because of the unsafe situation. The floods started last Tuesday, shortly after the worst wildfires in the east of the country were extinguished. The three provinces are all close to the Black Sea and are more likely to be affected by flooding. It's not usual to be as intense as this year.

Turkish Officer Gets Final Asylum in Greece

Turkish Officer Gets Final Asylum in Greece. One of the eight Turkish officers who had fled to Greece after the failed coup in 2016 was finally granted asylum. That has determined the highest Greek administrative judge, Greek media reports.   The ruling is probably a harbinger for the course of the proceedings against the seven other officers. The Greek court previously blocked delivery of the eight officers. Turkish President Erdogan has repeatedly asked for the extradition of the eight men who, according to Ankara, were involved in the attempt to overthrow his government. In Turkey, the military has already been found guilty of high treason, says iStorify.
