Sony Unveils New Flagship Smartphone With First True Optical Zoom

With the Xperia 1 IV, Sony today introduced its latest top smartphone. According to Sony, the biggest eye-catcher is the triple camera, which includes a unique optical telephoto zoom lens. In addition, the device strongly focuses on gaming and audio functions.

The Xperia 1 IV features an ultra-wide 16mm lens, a 24mm wide lens and an optical zoom. That periscopic lens, placed across the phone’s width, works in the same seamless way as a classic zoom. According to the Japanese electronics giant, that, in combination with the range of 85-125 mm, is a first on a smartphone.

All lenses also have a 12MP Exmor RS for a mobile image sensor with 120fps. This allows the phone to capture 4K footage with 5x slow motion with any lens. There’s also a 3D iToF sensor for depth information and AI-based object recognition for precise and accurate AF (autofocus) and low-light tracking.

According to Sony, gamers and binge watchers can look forward to the 4K OLED display of 120Hz. It has a 6.5-inch diagonal, 21:9 screen ratio and features Real-time HDR drive for better visibility of both bright and dark areas. In addition, the Xperia 1 IV is optimized for Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Elite Gaming and also offers Heat Suppression power control to counteract performance loss and battery degradation due to high temperatures.

Under the Xperia 1 IV hood, we can see the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 Mobile platform that works with 5G and Wi-Fi 6E. The device comes with 12 GB RAM, 256 GB ROM, and a 5,000 mAh battery that is back at fifty percent of its capacity in half an hour, thanks to the fast charging function. In addition, Sony’s new flagship has a water and dust resistance of IP65/68 and is equipped with Gorilla Glass Victus from Corning on the front and back.
